A cat that is kept indoors faces fewer health risks than an outdoor cats may be struck by cars, poisoned by pesticides or attacked by sick or unfriendly animals. But even indoor cats are not entirely safe. They can fall from open windows and unenclosed Balcones. In addition, many clearing products and certain houseplants, such as ivy, are poisonous to cats. Owners should place such items out of the reach of cats.

Kittens should be taken to a veterinarian when they are about 8 to 10 weeks old for a physical examination. They should also receive vaccinations to protect them from common cat diseases. An adult cat should visit a veterinary care protects an owner health as well as the cat because some animals diseases can be transmitted to people. Such a disease is called a zoonosis.

Cat owners should learn to recognize signs of illness in their pet. A healthy cat has clean ears, clear eyes, a moist nose, pink tongue and gums, a clean and glossy coat. Whenever a cat shows any change in appearance or behavior for more than 24 hours, the owner should consult a veterinarian.

One of the most serious and widespread cat diseases is panleukopenia, also called feline infectious enteritis (FIE). This highly contagious infection is caused by a virus and is often fatal. Symptoms of panleukopenia in clued listlessness, loss of appetite, high fever and severe vomiting and diarrhea. If a cat has several of these symptoms, call a veterinarian at once. All cats should be vaccinated yearly against panleukopenia.

Two other diseases that strike cats are feline leukamea and cat flu. Feline leukaemia is a form of cancer that affects the cat blood-forming organs. It is always fatal. It is caused by a virus that can also cause nonfatal ailments. A vaccine against feline leukaemia was developed in 1985.

Respiratory infections ranging from mild colds to pneumonia and cat flu are common among cats. Signs of such infections include sneezing, a runny nose, watery eyes and fever. A veterinarian should be called immediately. It is possible to have vaccinations against respiratory infections, but it is not possible to guarantee protection against cat flu because there are so many different viruses which affect cats.

Many kind of parasites may cause health problems in cats. Certain types of worms, including roundworms and tapeworms, can infect cat intensities and other organs. Worms may cause listlessness, weight loss, vomiting and diarrhea. Some other parasites may live on a cat skin and cause several itching. Fleas and ear mites are the most common external parasites. Cats may also develop ringworm, a skin disease caused by a fungus. A veterinarian should be consulted about the treatment of these health problems.

Each year, millions of unwanted cats are abandoned. Animal shelters must destroy many of these homeless cats. Countless other strays die of starvation, injury or disease. Because the problem unwanted cats is so serious, owners should not allow their cats to mate unless a good home can be provided for the kittens.

Owners can try to prevent cats from mating by keeping them indoors. But this method of birth control is difficult. It also does not prevent such undesirable sex-related behavior as the spraying of urine by the male at to mark their territory. Or the howling of female cat during oestrus.

A veterinarian can permanently prevent a cat from reproducing by neutering it, that is by surgically removing some of the cat sex organs. Neutering also ends sex-related behavior. The operation is called spaying when performed on a female cat and castration when done on a male cat. Many verterinarians recommend that female be spayed before their first oestrus and they will suggest the right age for a particular kitten. Male cats can be neutered from about 4-6 months of age.

Siamese cats have vibrant blue eyes and distinctive markings known as their “points” which are their ears, feet, tail and face. The points are a darker color than the rest of the body. They have very big ears and a long slender body build. When they are first born they do not have their permanent color yet but it develops as they grow. There are a few different color variations recognized in the Siamese cat breed which are lilac point, chocolate point, seal point, blue point, fawn point and tabby point.
Caring for your Siamese cat doesn’t require too much maintenance. They need to be bathed once a month if possible and brushed out a few times a month. Taking care of your cat the best you can will prolong their life. Siamese cats have been known to live up into the twenties.

History
Siamese cats originated hundreds of years ago in Siam (now Thailand). They appeared in the West in the mid-to-late 1800s.These early cats were delicate and subject to health problems.

They had crossed eyes and kinked tails, thick, round heads and solid, muscular bodies that distinguish the traditional Siamese from today's show Siamese - characteristics now considered faults.

Traditional Siamese are purebred cats, descended from the original cats imported from Siam.

Today, there are two distinct varieties, one of which is the Traditional. Traditional Siamese cats are rare, though they seem to be making a comeback.
Description
There are two known body types for the Siamese - most cat fancy associations recognize only the first.

Modern Siamese is the cat type most frequently observed in cat shows. It is easy to distinguish by its svelte elongated silhouette and its wedged head shape.

Traditional (Apple-Head) Siamese are larger than the Modern (Show) Siamese, with a rounder head shape and a less extreme look.

The Traditional is much closer to the Siamese cat as it originally was.

All Siamese cats share the colourpoint pattern, where the cooler body parts (feet, tail, and face) are of a darker colour than the rest of the body.

Kittens are born without the dark markings and develop them throughout the first weeks of their lives.

The different colours accepted by all cat fancy associations are seal (dark brown), chocolate, blue, and lilac (light grey with a pink tinge).

Some associations also recognize red and cream point as Siamese, as well as the various combinations of tabby (lynx) or tortoiseshell point patterns. Other associations class these varieties as Shorthair Colourpoints and refer to them as a different breed.

Characteristics and Temperament
Modern (Show) Siamese have affectionate inquisitive personalities, although the Modern is likely to be more independent than the Traditional. Modern Siamese cats are House cats.

Traditional Siamese cats make extremely good pets being affectionate, intelligent, and full of personality. The variety is very robust, and generally has very few health problems. Traditional Siamese cats are House cats.

Overall, Siamese cats are calm, affectionate cats, typically healthy and long-lived - 15-20 years is average, and over 20 is not uncommon.

Special Needs
Siamese cats need relatively little grooming. Their close-lying coat can be gently brushed just once a week to remove dead hair.

This breed has several distinctive genetic faults, all of which are cosmetic and require no medical treatment. These include crossed eyes and a kinked tail. These faults are becoming more rare with time as breeders try to breed them out.

Abyssinian Cat Breed

Svelte cat originally from Egypt or Ethiopia, docile and energetic; it has a melodious meow.
Abyssinian cats have a long and slender build and has a very elegant appearance but are still quite muscular. They have short thick hair that’s very soft. There are four different color variations of Abyssinians which are Ruddy, Blue, Fawn and Red.

These cats love interacting with people and make great companions. Some of their personality traits are compared to a dog which makes them that much more interesting. The Abyssinian cat breed is very intelligent and full of curiosity. They will follow you around the house from room to room just to be a part of whatever you are doing at the time. Since they are very active cats, they do need a good amount of exercise daily. Abyssinians like to perch above everything else in the room so a cat condo would make them very happy.

Just like with any other cat breed, keeping your Abyssinian inside will keep them in better health and prolong their life. This particular breed is prone to gingivitis so preventative dental care would be in their best interest. There aren’t any major health issues related to the Abyssinian cat breed.

This breed is very active, colorful and muscular. They are medium in size, with almond-shaped eyes of green and gold. Their heads are slightly rounded on top and have long tails. They come in three special breed colors: ruddy (orange-brown marked with dark brown or black), red (warm and glowing spotted with chocolate brown) and blue (ticked with various shades of slate blue). Their coats are soft, silky, dense and medium in length.

Although the Abyssinian is one of the oldest known breeds, there continues to be speculation and controversy concerning its history.

In appearance, Abyssinians resemble the paintings and sculptures of ancient Egyptian cats which portray an elegant feline with a muscular body, beautiful arched neck, large ears and almond shaped eyes.

Abys today still retain the jungle look of felis lybica, the African wildcat ancestor of all domestic cats.
The source of the name is not because Ethiopia, formerly Abyssinia, is thought to be the original home of these cats, but because the first "Abyssinian" exhibited at a show in England was reported to have been imported from that country.

This cat was brought from Abyssinia at the conclusion of the war. British troops left Abyssinia in May 1868, so that may have been the time when cats with ticked coats first entered England.
Unfortunately, there are no written records tracing the early Abyssinians to those imported cats, and many British breeders are of the opinion that the breed was actually created through the crossing of the various existing silver and brown tabbies with native British "Bunny" ticked cats.

Recent studies by geneticists show that the most convincing origin of the Abyssinian breed is the coast of the Indian Ocean and parts of Southeast Asia.

Although the Abyssinian as a breed was refined in England, its introduction to this country and others may have been the result of colonists and merchants stopping in Calcutta, the major port for the Indian Ocean.

Abyssinian cats are well-proportioned cats, with a medium-sized body.

Abyssinians have large attentive ears and beautiful almond-shaped green or gold eyes.

The coat of Abyssinian cats is their most remarkable attribute. Each hair of the coat has several bands of colour - this is known as agouti colour.
You can see Agouti hair on any tabby cat - it is the hair colour between the tabby stripes or spots.

The Abyssinians, however, have what is called a "ticked" agouti coat all over their body, except on their faces, where they also have a tabby facemask.

Originally, the Abyssinian agouti coat had one accepted colour - ruddy brown. Today three more colours are recognized for this breed: red, blue, and fawn.
Any of the four colours should be evenly ticked all over the cat's body.

Characteristics and Temperament
Abyssinian cats are renowned for their high intelligence and playful nature. They usually mix well with children and other pets and like to join in family activities.

Many Abyssinians can be taught basic tricks and some will even teach their owners to fetch.

Special Requirements
Play and exercise are a vital part of daily routine. Groom daily by rubbing with a gloved hand.

The most well-known American Shorthair colour today is the silver tabby, with dense black markings set on a sterling silver background.

The American bobtail is an untamed looking creature noted for its wild look, with an exceptional disposition and adaptability.

Description
The American Bobtail is a medium-to-large, naturally occurring, bobtailed cat; a noticeably athletic animal, well muscled, with the appearance of power.

The tail should be clearly visible above the back when the cat is alert and is not to exceed the hock in length. The optimum tail is articulate and nearly straight with the slightest of curves.

The American Bobtail cat possesses a strong, broad modified wedge-shaped head, with a distinctive brow above large almost almond shaped eyes giving it a natural hunting gaze.

Its unique coat comes in a medium, semi-dense shorthair and a medium-length longhair that is resilient and resistant to water.

When in motion, it should exhibit a natural rolling gait giving the cat with all of its combined physical characteristics the resemblance of a bobtailed wildcat.

This is a slow maturing breed taking two to three years to reach to full adult.

Maine Coon cats come in many colours and patterns, although they are best known for the brown tabby variety. Here are some of the most common patterns:

Solid colours: Include black, white, orange, blue or cream.
Bi-colour: Predominantly white with patches of one other colour.
Tortoiseshell or Calico: A patchy pattern made up of three or more distinct colours (usually black, orange, and cream/white).

Tabby: A darker stripy pattern on a lighter background colour; most often brown, orange, blue, or cream. Nose and paw pad colours usually correspond to predominant coat colour, varying from pink to black.

History
The British Shorthair, probably the oldest English breed of cat, traces its ancestry back to the domestic cat of Rome.

This breed was first prized for its physical strength and hunting ability, but soon became equally recognized and valued for its calm demeanor, endurance and loyalty to man.

Description
The British Shorthair cat has a broad and massive body with strong legs, round paws, and a thick, round-tipped tail.
The head is round with pronounced whisker pads. The eyes are round and open, and the ears are round and well set apart.

The overall look is a round, massive, smiling, "teddy bear" cat.
The coat of the British Shorthair is short but very dense. Its texture is not particularly soft, but is smooth and carpet-like.

Originally, pedigreed British Shorthairs had blue coats - in fact, the breed was once called the British Blue.


Today these breed may come in many colours and patterns, but most associations still do not recognize the British Colourpoint Blue.
The many colours include Bicolours, Colourpointed and the self which includes the Cream British Shorthair the Blue British Shorthair, black, and the Orange-Eyed White British Shorthairs.


In addition there is also the Smoked British Shorthairs, Tabby, including Tortie Tabby (Classic, Mackerel, Spotted, Tipped, including Golden Tipped (pictured below), Tortie including Tortie and White, and Manx.

Characteristics and Temperament
Because of its easy-going nature and intelligence, it has become a favorite of animal trainers, and in recent years many examples of these cats have appeared in Hollywood films and television commercials.

The British Shorthair is easy to groom and is a playful but no-nonsense cat. He tends to be reserved, in fact typically British by nature, but once he becomes a part of the family he is a devoted cat and undemanding companion.
